LARGE SCALE ORNAMENTAL PLANT PRODUCTION AND ENERGY CONSERVATION |

| Abstract:
In Belgium, horticultural products account for about 17 % of the annual agricultural production meaning a yearly income of nearly 25 billion BF ( ~ 9 billion $). The income of glasshouse production can be estimated at 10 billion BF for a glasshouse area of 2 000 ha. The annual Belgian energy demand approximates 46 million t.oe. (ton oil equivalent) of this amount 1.5 million t.oe. is consumed by the agricultural sector. In this sector nearly 40 % (0.65 million t.oe.) is used for glasshouse heating. In 1979 the energy bill was close to 3 billion BF ( ~ 0.11 billion $). Rather scarce practical results are available with regard to energy consumption and possible energy savings in modern large scale ornamental plant production units. During the past year and including the first months of 1980 energy consumption (both heat and electricity) was measured.
