ISHS Acta Horticulturae 115: Symposium on More Profitable Use of Energy in Protected Cultivation

A COMPARISON OF SINGLE GLASS AND DOUBLE ACRYLIC SHEATING WITH RESPECT TO HEAT LOSS AND EFFECTS ON PLANT ENVIRONMENT

Authors:   Z. Sebesta, D. Reiersen
Abstract:
Two identical greenhouses, one covered with double acryll, the other with single glass, were compared with respect to heat loss, light conditions, rate of air change, plant temperature, air humidity and CO2 level.

The acrylic cover reduced the heat loss to about 50 % of that of the glasshouse. Wind had a much smaller effect on heat loss from the acrylic house than from the glasshouse. The acrylic house had a little higher rate of air change, it admitted about 15 % less light and had a higher air humidity than the glasshouse. During nights a higher leaf temperature was observed in the acrylic house and at times it also seemed to have a higher CO2 content.
