ISHS Acta Horticulturae 115: Symposium on More Profitable Use of Energy in Protected Cultivation

COMPUTER PROCESSING OF SPEAKING PLANT FOR CLIMATE CONTROL AND COMPUTER AIDED PLANTATION (COMPUTER AIDED CULTIVATION)

Authors:   Y. Hashimoto, T. Morimoto, S. Funada
Abstract:
Leaf temperature under the controlled environment gives a lot of physiological and ecological informations. Especially, distributional patterns of leaf temperature in the time-course change which is observed by digital image processing of thermography suggest dynamics of plant-water and water stress. The relationship between digital mean temperature and distributional temperature was made clear in leaves of sunflower. Since the relationship between distributional temperature of sunflower leaves and their stomatal aperture had been revealed, stomatal aperture was estimated with respect to water stress on the distributional pattern of leaf temperature. After examining distributional pattern of leaf temperature, the state of water stress in plant growth was identified by monitoring the mean temperature of leaf in the time-course change. Thus, how to manipulate environment sequentially was decided by computer on the identification mentioned above, that was Computer Aided Plantation (or Computer Aided Cultivation). CAP(CAC) should be better on automatic feedback theory. In most simple case, however, CAP(CAC) might be useful on sequential relay control without feedback loop. From the view of energy-saving, CAP(CAC) should be desirable since DDC is expensive and needs more energy. Fundamental experiments of CAP(CAC) were examined both in the steady state and in transient condition of sunflower plants. In transient state from night to day, plant was transferred by manipulating air humidity, where strong water stress was avoided. On the other hand, in the steady state, optimal photosynthetic rate was observed by identifying minimum water stress on leaf temperature. CAP(CAC) on "speaking plant" is useful control system in greenhouses.
