THE FLOODED FLOOR FOR WASTE HEAT UTILIZATION IN GREENHOUSES

Authors:   T.O. Manning, D.R. Mears, R. McAvoy, W.J. Roberts
Abstract:
An experimental greenhouse was built in order to evaluate the feasibilty of using warm water discharges from electrical power plants as a heat source for greenhouses. This prototype incorporates several concepts developed at Rutgers University for using low temperature water in conjunction with solar heating systems. The experimental results indicate the feasibility of designing a greenhouse that would use water at temperatures of 24°C or higher as the primary heat source, using insulating curtains to reduce the greenhouse heat load by 30% or more, and the flooded floor as the primary heat exchanger. The results also show that an evaporative cooling system can be used to reduce green-house temperatures during warm weather and cool power plant discharge water.
