THE USE OF LOW INTENSITY INFRARED FOR GREENHOUSE HEATING IN SOUTHERN ONTARIO

Abstract:
The effects of a low intensity infrared (IR) heating system were compared with forced air unit heaters using hot water generated by a central boiler plant. The study was conducted in a glasshouse range planted to standard carnations. Air and soil temperatures were determined in a three dimensional pattern in representative areas of the two different heated sections. No significant differences in soil or air temperatures at crop level were observed. Temperatures in the peak of the greenhouses were considerably higher in the IR heated greenhouse. A comparison of two different IR layouts indicated that the air temperature distribution depends highly upon the configuration of the installation. Energy savings of 33–41% were achieved with the IR system compared to the conventional heating method. Energy savings resulted from increased fuel conversion efficiency of the IR system.
