Abstract:
Australian conditions with high winter and summer insolation and clear, dry winter skies result in high daily temperatures in the glasshouse and a substantial radiation component in the night-time energy loss (60–70% of total). Traditional European type greenhouses are not suited to these conditions on either light or thermal grounds, requiring considerable energy inputs for winter heating and to a lesser extent summer cooling.
Development of a thermal storage rockpile system which incorporates a solar air heater and evaporative cooling facility is described.
Significant reduction in fossil fuel requirement for climate control has been achieved.
