ISHS Acta Horticulturae 115: Symposium on More Profitable Use of Energy in Protected Cultivation

PLANT PRODUCTION IN A GREENHOUSE COVERED WITH DOUBLE-ACRYL

Author:   H. Bjerre
Abstract:
Plant growth, plant development, and heat consumption in a greenhouse covered with rigid double-acryl show advantages in wintertime as compared with a normal glasshouse.

7 pot plant species were included in the experiment. The best result was found with Kalanchoë, where the time of production was 10 days less in the double-acryl house. This in spite of 22% reduction in light intensity. The combined effect of insulation and higher growth rate reduced energy consumption by 52% per plant produced.

The development of Chrysanthemum was extended 5 days in the double-acryl greenhouse, but still the energy consumption per plant produced was less than in the reference house.

Although the average air humidity was 86% in the day time and 81% in the night time, no fungal diseases were observed in the double-acryl house.
