ISHS Acta Horticulturae 115: Symposium on More Profitable Use of Energy in Protected Cultivation

DEVELOPMENTS IN ENERGY USE IN PROTECTED CULTIVATION IN IRELAND

Authors:   T. O'Flaherty, M.J. Maher
Abstract:
Increased oil prices in recent years have created serious cost pressures on the Irish protected cropping industry, encouraging in turn a number of approaches to reducing energy costs. These include: use of solid fuels; extract heat from electricity generation; thermal screens; the double-clad air-inflated polythene greenhouse; NFT with root zone warming and reduced night minimum air temperatures; wind energy; and airborne infra-red scanning for the study of greenhouse heat losses.
