Eighteen fluorescent pseudomonads were isolated from twig and leaf samples, which have associated blight symptoms on hazelnut cultivated in northeast Black Sea region, Turkey.
All of 18 isolates were evaluated by performing tests for levan production, oxidase activity, pectolytic capability, arginine dihydrolase activity and tobacco hypersensitivity tests.
According to the tests results, isolates were found belonging to the LOPAT group Ia.
Gelatin liquefaction and aesculin hydrolysis, tyrosinase activity and tartrate utilization known as GATTa test were performed for all isolates.
The toxin production ability was assessed by performing the polymerase chain reaction.
After PCR amplification by using B1 and B2 primers, the presence of syrB gene was determined for 16 of 18 isolates.
After pathogenicity test on immature sweet cherry fruitlets, sixteen isolates, which have syrB gene, caused deep, sunken, brown-black necrosis on fruitlets.
The host pathogenicity test of 6 representative isolates was performed by using two-year-old hazelnut 'Palaz'. All of them gave positive results after one and a half month.
According to the evaluation of all test results, 16 isolates were identified as Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, which has not known to occur on hazelnuts in Turkey so far.
