ISHS Acta Horticulturae 114: Symposium on Research and Development on Orchard and Plantation Systems

THE FIRST SEVEN YEARS OF SUPER HIGH DENSITY APPLE ORCHARDS IN WESTERN POLAND

Author:   T. Holubowicz
Abstract:
From 1973 to 1979, the investigation of a super high density planted orchard was carried out. One-year old apple trees of Azwellspur, Starkrimson and Cortland cvs. budded on MM 106 rootstocks were planted at two distances: 0,75 x 1,5 m (8 880 trees/ha) and 0,5 x 1,0 m (20 000 trees/ha).

In different plots M 26 rootstocks were planted at a distance of 0,75 x 1,5 m in early spring 1973. In summer Goldspur, Jerseymac, Macspur, Red James Grieve and Vista Bella cvs were budded "in situ". At the same time in two other plots Delikates cv. was budded on M 26 which had been planted at the same distances as Azwellspur in early spring 1973. From the beginning of the experiment, spraying twice yearly with 2 000 ppm of Alar and summer pruning were used to keep trees at the same size.
