ISHS Acta Horticulturae 114: Symposium on Research and Development on Orchard and Plantation Systems

DWARFING ROOTSTOCKS FOR PLUMS AND CHERRIES

Author:   A.D. Webster
Abstract:
Two recently released Prunus rootstocks, Pixy for plums and Colt for cherries, are described. Pixy is a truly dwarfing rootstock for both plums and gages, producing trees half to two-thirds the size of trees on St. Julien A. It induces precocious and regular cropping but often reduces fruit size slightly. Colt, a rootstock in the intermediate vigour category, is compatible with sweet, tart and ornamental cherries, induces precocious cropping and is extremely easy to propagate. Progress in the selection of other Prunus species and hybrids as dwarfing rootstocks for either plum or cherry is briefly described.
