ISHS Acta Horticulturae 114: Symposium on Research and Development on Orchard and Plantation Systems

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE CHEMICAL CONTROL OF TREE GROWTH

Author:   J.D. Quinlan
Abstract:
Recent investigations suggest that new growth regulators have potential for use at all stages of tree development, to improve nursery tree quality and orchard establishment, to induce early flowering and cropping, and to control the growth of orchard trees.

The rate at which orchard trees fill their allotted space and the subsequent control of tree growth are major factors determining the success or failure of high density plantings. Recently developed chemical methods of growth regulation which influence the form and growth of fruit trees are particularly relevant to the establishment and management of high density planting systems.
