ISHS Acta Horticulturae 114: Symposium on Research and Development on Orchard and Plantation Systems

PRODUCTIVITY, FRUIT QUALITY AND PHYSIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF FRUITING AT DIFFERENT PLANTING DENSITIES AND WITH DIFFERENT ROOTSTOCKS WITH APPLES

Author:   R. Silbereisen
Abstract:
Crop yields, weight and size of fruits and physiological aspects of fruiting were recorded from a trial of Golden Delicious and Cox's Orange Pippin on either M 9 or M 11 planted in four different systems in 1967.

The systems are:

  1. 3 x 1 m, single-row, rootstock M 9, 3 333 trees/ha (brutto)
  2. 5 x 0,75 m,double-row, rootstock M 9, 2 666 trees/ha
  3. 4 x 2 m, single-row, rootstock M 9, 1 250 trees/ha
  4. 5 x 3 m, single-row, rootstock M 11, 666 trees/ha.

With the cultivar 'Cox Orange' in system A the planting distances were changed into 3 x 2 m by removing each second tree in 1976. Strong yielding trees were thinned by chemicals and by hand with the aim of achieving comparable leaf-fruit ratios with all systems. In all years and for all trees the management was carried out in an intensive manner.
