Abstract:
The bacterial population of flower water of 8-hydroxyquinoline citrate (8-HQC) plus sucrose (SU) increased as the number of cut flower stem per volume of liquid increased.
Sterile water or solutions containing 8-HQC, SU, 8-HQC+SU, nutrient broth, and nutrient broth + 8-HQC were inoculated with Erwinia sp., Escherichia coli, or Bacillus cereus. 8-HQC or 8-HQC+SU inhibited E. coli and B. cereus but not Erwinia sp. 8-HQC in nutrient broth inhibited but did not kill Erwinia sp.
Snapdragon spikes held in water or 8-HQC+SU solution and inoculated with E. coli, Erwinia sp., and bacterial mixture wilted and did not maintain quality as spikes held in water or solutions not inoculated.
