Abstract:
Botrytis cinerea is at the forefront of fungicide resistance development.
Field isolates have emerged and are now widespread in the eastern part of the United States being resistant to fungicides of multiple FRAC codes.
They include FRAC 1, 2, 7, 9, 11, 12, and 17. In some cases isolates are resistant to compounds from up to 6 different FRAC codes and there are reports of emergence of 'superstrains', isolates that are resistant to compounds from all seven, single-site action FRAC codes registered for gray mold control.
Resistance is mostly due to an accumulation of point mutations in target genes over time, but other mechanisms, such as those causing the multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotypes MDR1 and MDR1h, exist.
Management of these isolates under field conditions is challenging and will require an integrated approach.
