Abstract:
All the classical ancient cultivars of the multiflora begonia varieties which are propagated vegetatively are virus infected.
Three years subsequent trials for thermotherapy treatment lead to the conclusion that this method is very effective, giving a high percentage of healthy plants, when using shoots grown on bulbs treated for 28 days at 38°C. Subsequent virustests are however necessary.
Different methods were compared as f.i. indexation on test plants, serology and ELISA. It occurs that inoculation on Nicotiana megalosiphon is the most reliable method.
Outdoor experiments showed that disease free plants gave a slight better yield, but a significant higher flowering.
When using first "in vitro" multiplication from virus free material the results were even more significant on flowering and on the yield and bulb volume, but especially on the bulb weight in the case of "in vitro" propagation.
