BEAN YELLOW MOSAIC VIRUS IN SOME IRIDACEOUS PLANTS

Authors:   A.F.L.M. Derks, Jenny L. Vink-van den Abeele, P.J. Muller
Abstract:
Viruses isolated from Crocosmia, Montbretia, Tritonia, freesia, and bulbous iris were identified as bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) on the basis of host range tests serology and electron microscopy.

BYMV is in all likelihood the cause of a previously unknown disorder in freesia cv. Aurora expressed as yellowing of the inner leaves, reddish-brown necrotic leaf veins, and necrotic spots in the corms, because mechanical inoculation of young freesia seedlings cv. Imperial with BYMV led to exactly the same severe symptoms.

BYMV was found in association with typical mosaic symptoms in iris cv. Professor Blaauw, Crocosmia, and Montbretia; infection experiments are required to determine whether BYMV is the real and sole cause.
