APRICOT STONE AS AN IMPORTANT KEY FOR DETERMINATION OF THE CULTIVARS

Author:   H. Plock

Abstract:
The determination of the cultivar in apricot is facilitated when more attention is paid to its stone. The apricot stone may be a constant and characteristic property of the cultivar, since contrary to the size of fruit, the stone shape and its upper surface may be subject to only slight fluctuations. In addition, the stones can be conserved for an indefinitely long time and be at a disposal at any time when it is required.

From available material should be select about 10 to 20 normally developed typical stones. Records were taken on length, thickness and width, and from these they calculated the ratio, whereby the number of 100 served for the length. Relation of width to thickness is getting, when is put that is width equally of 100. For example, in the cultivar Mambacher Frühe the size of stone was 25.2 mm : 14 mm : 21.3 mm (length : width : thickness). From this is getting the followin relation of numbers: Length : width = 100 : 56., the length : thickness = 100 : 85 and the width : thickness = 100 : 152.1 or more simple expressed = 100 : 56 : 85: 152.1.

The form of the stone is most characteristics for the cultivar which may be calculated according to the formula: factor of stone =
Formula available in full text only

On the basis of practical results, the cultivars with regard to the stone factor, may be divided into two groups. The factor 2,7 has been taken as the limit. The cultivar with a thick stone is considered to be the one whose stone factor is less than 2,7. When is factor of stone over 2,7 to means that cultivars there are thin stone. Factor of stone is 2.12 = thick stone.

The size is calculated from its length, width and thickness and from these data, the relationship is made.

To describe the stone should be paid attention on the following: 1. length, 2. width, 3. thickness, 4. form, 5. upper surface, 6. top, 7. convexity and 8. back groove.
