ISHS Acta Horticulturae 11: IV International Symposium on Apricots and Apricot Culture

FOREWORD

Author:   P.D.E.S. Paunovic
Abstract:
The IVth International Symposium on Apricots and Apricot Culture which is held today in Subotica, Yugoslavia, is a continuation of the earlier started exchange of opinion, consultation and other kinds of cooperation of scientific and professional workers from all over the world, for the purpose of solving many problems regarding apricots, and especially on the enlightenment of the occurrence of apricot apoplexy, or dieback, and also for the purpose of a successful growing of apricots.

At the time of the first International Symposium on Apricots and Apricot Culture at Perpignan, France, in 1961, numerous occurrences and problems in connection with apricots were not explicit, nor clearly explained. However, after three International Symposiums on Apricots and Apricot Culture, the number of unsolved problems had considerably decreased and we may rightly say that after the fourth Symposium we will be able to approach solutions of many problems for wide practice, and set the tasks for the solution by the scientific Service, with more confidence.

The achieved results have been obtained thanks to the team work by workers of many countries i. e., the problem of apricots was simultaneously elaborated by many pomologists, selectionists, agrotechnicians, physiologists, virologists, bacteriologists, mycologists, and others. I sincerely hope that this cooperation will further continue and make progress in the near future.

Thanks to such cooperation, the IVth International Symposium on Apricots and Apricot Culture is now held in Yugoslavia, under the auspices of our host the Federation of Agricultural Engineers and Technicians of Yugoslavia.

On behalf of the International Working Group on Apricots and Apricot Culture as an integral part of the International Society of Horticultural Science, I wish to thank you most heartily for the magnificient gathering of such a large number of eminent scientific workers on various specialities. Our thanks are also due to the Yugoslav Committee for the Organization of this Symposium, and the generous help extended for the welfare of this gathering.

Prof Dr. Eng. Staniša A. Paunovic
Chairman of the International
Working Group on Apricots and
Apricot Culture of the I.S.H.S.

The initiative of the International Working Group on Apricots and Apricot Culture of the I.S.H.S. for Yugoslavia to be the host of the IVth International Symposium on Apricots and Apricot Culture, has been accepted with great pleasure by the Federation of Agricultural Engineers and Technicians of Yugoslavia. This pleasure proceeds with the knowledge that it would represent a gathering of eminent experts from all parts of the world, who work on the problems of production, processing, and marketing of apricots; and that an exchange of many year experience would take place, with new knowledge

EDITOR'S PREFACE

Considering the fact that four official languages were used at the Simposium: English, French, Russian, and Serbo-Croat, which were simultaneously translated, the submitted works have been printed in the above mentioned languages.

In preparing the works to be published, corrections were mainly those of technical nature, such as grammatical, or idiomatic, but strickly keeping to the original meaning. Bigger corrections were sent to the respective author in order to get his agreement, and they were always accepted as satisfactory.

Since the summaries were published before the Symposium (The book of summaries) a full text of the submitted work did not contain a summary, it was published without it, if written in English, French, or Russian language. However, the written works in Serbo-Croat language (which is not widely known in international affairs), besides the full text contain summaries and Tables translated into English.

The proceedings of the Symposium have been published in three parts: No. 11 Volume I, Volumes II Volumes III.

No. 11 Volume I covers: Intoduction; A. Apricot Situation and Economy; B. Soils, Fertilization and Water Management.

No. 11 Volumes II covers: C. Plant Breeding and Propagation.

No. 11 Volumes III covers: D. Plant Diseases and Pest and Weed Control; E. Environment.

Financial facilities for publishing the submitted works were granted by the Yugoslav Committee for the Organization of Symposium and the International Society for Horticultural Science gave the coloured bindings for all three volumes.

For the preparation of the published material, my hearty thanks are due to Dr. Eng. Aleksandar Misev, Councilor of the Federal Economic Chamber, Belgrade, and to Mr. Arandel Damnjanovic, Editor of the Zadruzna knjiga, Belgrade, Dr. Ir. G. de Bakker, General Secretary of the I. S. H. S., The Hague, Netherlands.
