Abstract:
The Spanish Pear Germplasm Bank is located in Zaragoza and is curated by the AgriFood Research Center of Aragon (CITA). In the last years a big effort has been taken to complete the phenotypical characterization of the 34 most common landraces and local accessions in the bank along with 39 international reference cultivars. This characterization was based on 50 descriptors (25 quantitative and 25 qualitative) adopted from Bioversity International and UPOV, focused on flower, leaves and fruit characters. Pictures and scanning of leaves, flowers and fruit were done to complete the characterization with wide image documentation. After quantitative data were transformed into qualitative and both of them translated into binomial matrix, an UPGMA dendrogram was built according to the phenotypic closeness of the accessions, which showed high closeness in 20 of the 34 Spanish cultivars. A possible synonymy between a Spanish accession and a foreign cultivar was shown. At this moment, a basic molecular characterization with 8 SSRs is being completed and results will be used to ascertain these results and to establish a correlationship between phenotypic and genetic distance matrices.
