| Abstract:
Four aphid-borne viruses were detected in various complexes in plants of commercially-important cultivars of bulbous iris grown in Britain. Narcissus latent virus, a typical but distinct carlavirus, alone induced barely discernible leaf chlorosis in mechanically inoculated irises. Of the other three viruses (iris severe mosaic, iris mild mosaic and bean yellow mosaic), all of which are definite but distinct potyviruses, iris severe mosaic virus alone induced conspicuous and permanent leaf chlorosis in mechanically-inoculated irises; although bean yellow mosaic virus was consistently associated with very severe leaf chlorosis in naturally-infected irises, the symptomatology of iris mild mosaic virus has yet to be determined. Turnip mosaic virus, another distinct potyvirus infecting bulbous iris in Japan, was not detected. The separation of viruses occurring in complexes and the application of detection methods in relation to the production and propagation of virus-free iris stocks is briefly discussed. | |
