Abstract:
Rhizoglyphus mites have generally been considered to live on damaged or diseased bulbs (Latta, 1939). Although this view is still valid for field-grown bulbs in The Netherlands, observations made in several crops grown in glasshouses have indicated that Rhizoglyphus may behave as a parasite as well.
Similar observations have been made in the past elsewhere, but infection experiments gave inconclusive results (Bald and Jefferson, 1952; Forsberg, 1959; Ookawa and Sugimoto, 1966). Infection experiments were required to investigate this supposed parasitism.
Control measures are described.
