Abstract:
Severe epidemics of gladiolus rust caused by Uromyces transversalis were observed during the last 5–6 years in Central and Southern Italy.
From the researches carried out on the biology and control of this pathogen the following conclusions can be drawn: 1) the uredospores germinate at temperatures between 5 and 25°C, with an optimum at 15–20°C; 2) the infection of gladiolus plants was severe at 10–20°C, when the leaves remained wet for at least 12 hrs, and slight at 10–15°C with a wetting duration of 6–9 hrs and at 25°C with a wetting duration of 12 hrs; 3) the length of incubation period varied from 22–23 days at 10°C to 8–10 days at 25°C; 4) all the varieties tested were susceptible to the rust, but susceptibility varied greatly among the varieties tested; 5) among the fungicides assayed the best results were given by oxycarboxin at 0.5 g/l and by benodanil at 1 g/l applied every week.
