Abstract:
During the last ten years some specific fungicides for the control of Pythium root rot in Dutch bulb cultivation have been registered.
In particular, the compounds etridiazole, fenaminosulf, and prothiocarb are widely used.
The results are not always satisfactory, however, and the search for new compounds has continued.
In connection with the glasshouse production of bulb flowers, special attention has been paid to furalaxyl and metalaxyl.
The activity of these fungicides has proved to be good and longlasting, and they differ as to phytotoxicity and mobility in the soil.
For bulb production, a new combination of dichloropropene + etridiazole is injected into the soil in a layer at a depth of 20 cm.
Furalaxyl and metalaxyl, which are also appropriate for use in the field, must be mixed very thoroughly into the top 20 cm layer of the soil.
Results, obtained with these compounds in the culture of crocus and iris are discussed.
