Abstract:
Soft rot of tulip bulbs proved to be caused by specific strains of Pythium ultimum Trow, but not by other strains of that species or by any of the other Pythium spp. tested.
All of these, however, induced root rot.
The susceptibility of the bulb tissue decreased, starting shortly after planting; more than 2 ½ weeks after planting infection was greatly reduced, and after that few plants were lost.
In peaty potting soil, increasing temperature and moisture content of the soil favoured the disease; no soft rot occurred at 12°C. Although the brown tunic appeared to reduce infection slightly, this was of no practical value.
