| Abstract:
About 1950 mechanisation of bulb production started. Since Dutch bulb growing has undergone a revolution from complete manual work (even ploughing was quite unusual in those days) till practically complete mechanisation of all work. Labour is now reduced to less than ¼th of the amount of labour required in 1950. At first the process of mechanisation almost completely dealt with the field work. However, since 1970 the aim of mechanisation has been handling of the bulbs after lífting. So far bulbs have been handled in small baskets or trays. The increased capacity of the bulb lifters made manual handling in small units too labour-consuming and a bottleneck in the organisation. So handling in large units for transport and storage became actual. At the moment bulkbin storage and handling is rapidly introduced and will change the Dutch bulb industry during harvesting time deeply. | |
