Abstract:
During the last ten years there has been a considerable decrease in the number of bulbgrowing holdings in the Netherlands.
This is due to scale effects as a result of rationalisation of labour inputs.
In a period of 10–15 years labour demands for bulbgrowing has decreased to 1/3–¼.
Up to now this development, which is still going on, has not lead to a migration of bulbgrowing to other regions where conditions for large scale farming should be better.
The position of the three traditional centres of bulbgrowing has not weakened.
The same applies to the status of the specialised bulbgrowing holdings.
Their number accounts still always for 55% of all holdings with bulbs and for 80% of total bulb acreage.
The position of bulbgrowing on non-horticultural holdings (p.e. arable farms) has not changed substantially; on these farms not more than 6–7% of total bulb acreage is found.
The revolution in growing methods has not induced a revolution in structures.
