Abstract:
Bulbous plants have been grown in Poland, for production scale, for last 30 years and in 1979 they were evidented on an area circa of 500 ha.
Gladioluses /250 ha/ and tulips /200 ha/ are the most important ones, but still their amount is not enough to cover the demand.
Hyacinths, daffodils, crocuses and lilies /circa 50 ha/ are still among the miscellaneous.
Climate and soil condition studies, which were done by Szlachetka /1976, 1977/ to find the best regions for bulbous plants growing in Poland, are the base for expansion of this area.
The previous paper which was presented by Dargiewicz /1971/ at the First International Symposium on Flower Bulbs, showed, that both - gladioluses and tulips are very important flower bulb crop in Poland.
Any crop production has its own requirements for the environment, of which light, temperature and the availability of water and plant nutrition are the most important ones and these determine the physiological limits of bulb production.
The productivity of tulip bulbs expressed as weight increase as a percentage of planted weight, has been found to vary in our country between 50 – 220, depending on cultivars and also climate and soil conditions.
There are no political reasons to stimulate our production /Kronenberg 1977/; the only reason to increase our bulb plants production is the economical one.
At the mid-age of this century, we started with the breeding of bulbous plants.
