ARTIFICIAL LIGHT AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR DAYLIGHT IN FORCING OF TULIPS

Author:   M. Jerzy
Abstract:
In four-year experiments on tulip forcing in artificial light conditions, the possibility of reduction of electricity costs was considered.

Darwin Hybrid tulips were forced in a growing room where, as a source of artificial light, incandescent lamps, blended - light lamps and high-pressure mercury fluorescent lamps were used. The influence of 6 – 14 hour daylengths and 250 – 2000 1x light intensities on quality of flowers and duration of forcing periods were investigated in the standard method as well as in the +5°C method. One group of plants was forced in daylight.

In forcing of tested cultivars, a 6 hour daylength and a 250 1x intensity of light were sufficient. A 1000 1x light intensity was more advantageous for +5°C tulips only. Flowering of plants in this treatment started 3–5 days earlier.
