Abstract:
Twenty species of beetles, five species of caterpillars and some psocids and mites infest stored cashew kernels.
Among these Cadra cautella (Wlk.), Corcyra cephalonica (St.) (Pyralidae), Tribolium castaneum (Herb.) (Tenebrionidae) and Necrobia rufipes (De C.) (Cleridae) cause direct damage to the kernels while others contaminate them with their presence and excreta.
Strict sanitation of the processing sheds and premises, keeping processed nuts in closed containers, undertaking peeling, grading and packing in quick succession are suggested as measures to control these pest infestations.
