Abstract:
In the ancient buildings of the monastery of Senanques near Avignon in France a symposium was organised on microclimat control in green-houses.
Participants were invited from the ISHS-Working Group on Greenhouse Technology of the Commission for Horticultural Engineering and from the EC-Group for Research on Energy Losses in Greenhouse Cultivation in the Mediterranean Region.
The European Commission has made funds available for travel expenses, daily allowances and for the publishing costs of the lectures.
The papers deal with several aspects of energy saving in protected cultivation, thus making a valuable effort to try to solve some of the problems which already confront most horticulturists of today and not only those in Southern Europe.
As the convener of the symposium soon after the meetings had to fulfil other responsabilities for his government, the date of publishing has been delayed more than was expected.
But as in this day and age energy saving is still a major issue which has to be tackled in almost every sphere of life, the delay will not disturb the interest in the problems discussed here.
I hope that also this volume nr. 107 of Acta Horticulturae will give a good contribution to the development of new technologies in protected cultivation.
