Abstract:
Horticulture for People was proposed by the Commission for Amateur Horticulture to the Organizing Committee of the XXth International Horticultural Congress to emphasize the involvement of horticultural scientists in the activities of amateur horticulture.
Whereas most research programs in horticulture are concerned with plant production, this symposium discussed the problems of people who use plants and how horticultural scientists might be of help.
It was designed to appeal both to scientists attending the Congress and to the local horticultural audience in Australia including commercial nurserymen, members of gardening societies, and gardening publications.
The symposium attracted the greatest number of participants of any at the Congress and the speakers were interviewed extensively by the press.
The Commission and organizers of the Symposium are grateful to the leadership of the XXth International Horticultural Congress for their support in presenting this unique program, especially President W.F. Walker.
