Abstract:
The worldwide table grape market lacks high quality cultivars with resistance to downy and powdery mildews as well as botrytis bunch rot. Our resistance breeding strategy is based on the pyramidisation of monogenic resistances of different origin against one pathogen to gain durable resistance and prohibit pathogens to break through the resistance. The monogenic, eventually oligogenic inheritance of resistance genes is a prerequisite, because during the generations for resistance gene stacking and quality advancement, minor QTLs of polygenic resistance can not be followed by markers and would be lost.
Accordingly, in our breeding program the Run1 gene from Muscadinia rotundifolia is supported by the Ren1 gene from Vitis vinifera ‘Kishmish vatkana’ and ‘Dzhandzhal kara’. The downy mildew resistance is inherited by the Rpv1 gene from Muscadinia rotundifolia and supported by the Rpv12 gene from Vitis amurensis. Botrytis resistance is based on morphological characters inherited from significantly tolerant cultivars.
