Bilberry is one of the best sources of flavonoids, strong antioxidant compounds which are of major interest for their health properties.
Recent results show that the content of flavonoids in both berries and leaves increases linearly from southern to northern latitudes.
The northern summer environment, with cool temperatures, long days and different composition of the light spectrum along the day, is proposed to have a particular role in this phenomenon, although genetic factors are also involved.
In this work we focused on the role of the light spectrum on the biosynthesis of flavonoid pathway genes in bilberry leaves.
Their expression increases earlier in time under blue and far red light, compared to red light.
Moreover, the R2R3-MYB transcription factors are expressed earlier than the flavonoid pathway genes, suggesting a regulatory effect of the quality of light on the flavonoid biosynthesis.
