THE VEGETABLE SEED INDUSTRY IN NEPAL

Author:   D. Pandey
Abstract:
Nepal being a country where 90 per cent of the population is engaged in agriculture and where the average land holding per household is 1.23 hectares (0.5 ha in hilly regions), relies primarily on subsistance farming. This is then supplemented by various other types of enterprises such as animal husbandry, beekeeping, small scale fruit and vegetable cultivation, cottage industries, and many others.

Recently an additional type of enterprise has proved to be very beneficial both from the financial standpoint and also in terms of providing a much needed input for the improvement of the nutritional quality of the daily diet. This enterprise is vegetable seed production and this paper is a discussion of how it evolved in Nepal and what the future holds for it.

In order to discuss this, first one should have a basic understanding of the country's wide and varied geographical and climatic conditions because the different production functions depend a great deal on temperature ranges and rainfall distribution.
