Abstract:
Flower bulbs have been appreciated and cultivated for thousands of years and long before they were widely grown commercially or extensively researched. They are mentioned frequently in mythology, ancient history, art, and literature. Although ornamental geophytes belong to more than 800 different genera, the industry is dominated by 7 genera: Tulipa, Lilium, Narcissus, Gladiolus, Hyacinthus, Crocus, and Iris. The Narcissus genus consists of about 63 species, with many subspecies and natural hybrids, and they primarily originate in the Iberian Peninsula and Europe. The diversification of the geophytes collection with new Narcissus cultivars determines the study of their behavior in the Transylvania region of Romania. The goal of this paper is to promote bulb production and utilization in different regions of our country. The researches concerning the behavior of six new daffodil cultivars were conducted at the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca, Romania, in the didactical field collection. The biological materials consist in the following cultivars: ‘Professor Einstein’, ‘Salome’, and ‘Mount Hood’, ‘Cum Laude’, ‘Fortune’ and ‘Golden Harvest’. During the experiments, some observations were made concerning the plants development. The results show that cultivar as ‘Salome’, ‘Cum Laude’ and ‘Golden Harvest’ present a remarkable decorative value, they performed well in our climate conditions and can be considered best material for multiplication and bulb production in order to be promoted in commercial cultures or for landscape design.
