ISHS Acta Horticulturae 100: Symposium on Production of Tomatoes for Processing

TOMATO INDUSTRY IN AUSTRALIA

Author:   M.N. Kinsella
Abstract:
Over the last five years about 80% of the 165 000 tonnes of tomatoes grown in Australia have been used for processing. The total area of the processing crop is 3 500 to 4 000 hectares, some 70% being grown in the State of Victoria and 30% in New South Wales. A small quantity is also produced in South Australia. Of the 110 000 to 140 000 tonnes grown each year about 55% is harvested by machine.

Although insignificant by world standards, the tomato processing industry, in quantity terms is one of the most important processed fruit and vegetable commodities in Australia, ranking third after citrus and potatoes. The annual value of the processing tomato crop to growers in 1978–79 was $8.5 million.
