ISHS Acta Horticulturae 100: Symposium on Production of Tomatoes for Processing

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF PROCESSING TOMATOES PRODUCTION IN ISRAEL

Authors:   J. Rudich, C. Geizenberg
Abstract:
Processing tomato production was developed in Israel during the last 14 years. Climate of relative dry conditions from April to November, and the economical necessity of local citrus processing plants, to extend the working period, have placed processing tomatoes as a first priority in our country. The development of production was accompanied by intensive research. In this presentation we would like to mention some research activities. We will stress mainly areas as variety evaluation, fertilizer and irrigation practices. Soil preparation, pest management, mechanical harvesting and planting schedules will not be mentioned, also those are essential areas in which major efforts were devoted to evaluate the proper methods for our conditions.
