UTILIZATION OF NATURAL VARIETIES TO DEVELOP RESISTANCE TO BIOTIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS IN PROCESSING TOMATO CULTIVARS

Abstract:
Tomatoes are a classical example of the use of interspecific hybridization to improve the characteristics of the cultivated species. The tomato is an advantageous crop for interspecific hybridization because excellent sources of germplasm exist in related wild species and all of them can be hybridized with L. esculentum. Most of the interspecific hybrids made in the past have been to increase disease resistance of the cultivated species. However, in the future, there will undoubtedly be increased emphasis on insect resistance and tolerance to environmental stress conditions which presently limit the adaptability and productivity of tomato cultivars. This paper will briefly review the genetic resources in tomato species for disease resistance, insect resistance, tolerance to adverse temperature conditions, and salt and drought tolerance.
