ISHS Acta Horticulturae 100: Symposium on Production of Tomatoes for Processing

A NEW TYPE OF FUNCTIONAL MALE STERILITY DERIVED FROM INTERSPECIFIC HYBRID

Author:   E. Kesicki
Abstract:
A simple plant showing a new type of functional male sterility was found in backcross derivatives of the hybrids L. esculentum Mill. and L. parviflorum Rick et al.. This plant also had a characteristic shape of cotyledones and leaves. All these characters - the male sterility and characteristic shape of cotyledones and leaves - are inherited jointly and depend on the interaction of three recessive genes.

Plants with this new type of functional male sterility ensured a sufficient level of cross polination. The characteristic cotyledon shape of this stock is of special benefit. Owing to this, seedlings from accidental self-pollination and F1 hybrids can be easily distinguished.

This new type of functional male sterility permits to reduce costs of the production of F1 hybrids seeds.
