ISHS Acta Horticulturae 100: Symposium on Production of Tomatoes for Processing

YIELD AND QUALITY TRAITS OF TWO NEW TOMATO VARIETIES FOR PEELING UNDER DIFFERENT IRRIGATION REGIMENS

Authors:   A. Alvino, L. Frusciante, L.M. Monti
Abstract:
Two new tomatoes for peeling (Vesuvio and Sorrento) have been compared with the control Cv. Roma VF under different irrigation regimens, with three irrigation frequencies, corresponding to values of 30, 60 and 90 mm from an "A" class pan combined with three watering depths (3.5 and 7 cm).

In comparison with the control, the new varieties were earlier, gave a similar total yield and showed better quality and flavour characteristics.

To higher irrigation frequencies corresponded higher marketable yield.

A clear effect of the irrigation on some of the quality traits was found: by decreasing the irrigation frequencies higher values of sugars and of solids were found. No effect was noted on color, pH and acidity.

The possibility to enhance the yield of tomatoes for peeling by increasing the irrigation without reducing the fruit quality is discussed.
