ISHS Acta Horticulturae 100: Symposium on Production of Tomatoes for Processing

Influence of planting season and calibre of planting material on the results of an industrial tomato crop in Tunisia

Authors:   H. Verlodt, A. Mougou
Abstract:
Early yield of a season crop destined to supply the tomato transformation industry was highly influenced by earliness of planting season, while calibre of planting material at the moment of transplanting had no significant effect. The most interesting varieties in view of their precocity, were particularly "Petoearly", just as "Merit", "VF 198" and "Petomech". Total yield decreases perceptibly owing to late transplantation and this because of the poor fruitset of the late transplantings during the hot season, starting around half June. The best transplanting season is situated around 15 March and this for either a good precocity or a good total yield. Later transplanting have a negative effect on total yield, while the results of an early transplant are incertain and depend upon the climatologic conditions during and after the planting period. The stem diameter of planting material had an insignificant influence on total yield. The most productive varieties were "VFN 8" and "Roma VFN". The percent of commercial fruits was very low with the varieties "Royal Chico" and "Slumac F2" and this because of their great sensitiveness to blossom end rot.
