ISHS Acta Horticulturae 100: Symposium on Production of Tomatoes for Processing

TOMATO ROOT SYSTEMS. A SHORT REVIEW WITH REFERENCE ON TOMATOES FOR PROCESSING

Authors:   C.A.M. Portas, J.J.F.B. Dordio
Abstract:
A revision of the written information about tomato root systems is reported with reference on some studies about cultivars for processing.

Type of root system and some of the root parameters - root depth and root width, total root length, root length per volume (root desity) and per area and root intensity - are analysed also looking for the influence of the genoma in their variability. Regarding soil characteristics that influence the rooting habits a special mention is made on dstribution of soil water, soil strength of argillic pans and nematodes. Shoot/root relationships are also refered.

A tentative insert of tomato root systems in the basic types of root systems is made both for direct seeded (including clumps) and transplanted tomatoes.

An annotated bibliography of printed matter on tomato rooting is offered.
