ISHS Acta Horticulturae 10: Symposium of Working Group on Plum Genetics and Plum Breeding

THE EFFECT OF THE PRUNUS MYROBALAN L. AND POZEGACA AS ROOTSTOCKS ON THE DEVELOPMENT AND VITALITY OF POZEGACA EMBRYO SAC

Author:   B. PEJKIC
Abstract:
For Yugoslavia as a whole, it is characteristic that from the standpoint of fruit growing, the cultivation of plums takes the leading place. It is also considered that of all plum varieties in Yugoslavian orchards about 50% comprise the Pozegaca variety, which is not only known in Yugoslavia but also throughout Europe, both as a table variety and also used for industrial processing.

When raising new plantation orchards there was a problem about the rootstock for the Pozegaca plum, since there were diverse opinions with regard to the utilization of Prunus myrobalan as a rootstock for the Pozegaca variety. One of the groups of scientists was in favour of propagating the Pozegaca by their own suckers, while the other was in favour of P.myrobalan.

For this reason we undertook the delicate task of studying at present the effect of P,myrobalan as a rootstock, compared with Pozegaca suckers, on the development and vitality of the Pozegaca embryo sac, and their potential influence on fertilization of the Pozegaca plum trees.
