THE INFLUENCE OF WEATHER ON THE PERIOD OF FRUIT DEVELOPMENT OF CERTAIN P. DOMESTICA L. VARIETIES |

| Abstract:
We distinguish two separate periods in the process of development and in the life of fruit. The first period extends from flowering respectively fructification until physiological maturity, respectively harvest time; the second from harvest till consumption. Because of external and internal changes in fruit, in individual fruit species and varieties, furthermore because of reasons of technical work, it is imperative that for each individual variety the time of ripening and harvesting should be most exactly established. With regard to the short period of the technological maturity, i.e. of optimal maturity for picking, in larger orchards a special problem is represented by the organisation of harvesting and the knowledge that a sufficient number of pickers, packing material, means of transport, storehouses and customers is available. Fruit picked too early is green and the taste is crude; in storehouse; in transport and on the market blemishes and defects occur, such as bitter rot, scalds, scab, and withering. Overripe fruit deteriorates quickly and rots. | |
