THE FREQUENCY OF SELF-FERTILE VARIETIES OF PLUMS AND DATA CONCERNING THEIR UTILITY |

| Abstract:
Most varieties of the fruit species cultivated in our country behave in the same way from the point of view of self-pollination. Some are self-fertile (apricot, peach etc.), others are self-infertile (apple, pear etc.). There are, however, a few fruit species (sour cherry, plum etc.) with varieties showing large differences in this respect. Thus, in order to ensure the success of plantation, information has to be gained on the self-pollinating properties of each variety of such fruit species before starting to grow them, especially if this is to be done on a commercial basis. It may be useful to reduce the number of varieties grown in modern commercial large scale plantations from the point of view of the organization of work and marketing. There are, however, several circumstances limiting this reduction, among others also the conditions of fertilization. There are several varieties of plums of domestic origin grown in our country, the conditions of fertilization of which are not known. This is why we started experiments to investigate the conditions of fertilization on a large collection of various varieties of plums whithin the framework of a program set forth to determine the utility of various varieties. The varieties involved in the program belong to the species Prunus domestica L. except of the variety Alutscha which belongs to the species P.cerasifera Ehrh. | |
