| Abstract:
This book is being published by the Commonwealth Bureau of Horticulture and Plantation Crops, East Malling, and is now in the press. Prepared over the past 3–4 years, it covers the published literature for the last 70 years (including annual and other printed reports) dealing with almonds, apricots, cherries, peaches and plums and their wild relatives. A very wide range of world literature has been examined some of which is not normally covered by abstracting journals dealing with this aspect of horticulture - in any event specialist abstracting journals in this field have existed for only about 35 years. Aspects such as disease, pest and hardiness response of cultivars and species, breeding behaviour, genetics, cytology, breeding methodology, pollen and pollination have all been included and the field of breeding and genetics has been extended to cover the classification and synonymy of cultivars and wild species. In addition, appendices are provided giving gene lists and bringing cherry compatibility groups up to date (together with genotypes) on a world basis. Similar lists are also provided for plum varieties. In all, nearly 3.000 papers and reports have been abstracted and the whole volume is provided with a very detailed index, enabling it to be used both as a reference book and as a fruit breeder's handbook for planning breeding programmes. To give some idea of the scope of this work, the varietal indexes cover 80 varieties of almonds, 313 apricots, 825 cherries, 1.271 peaches and 969 plums.
