ISHS Acta Horticulturae 10: Symposium of Working Group on Plum Genetics and Plum Breeding

A KARYOLOGIC STUDY OF PARENTS AND HYBRIDS OF PLUM VARIETIES DEVELOPED IN ROMANIA

Authors:   B. ECATERINA, V. COCIU
Abstract:
In the works undertaken to achieve new plum varieties in Romania, the Tuleu gras (sp.Prunus domestica L.) native plum variety was largely used as mother parent. The variety holds a series of valuable economic characters, especially concerning fruit, but also has some defects in what concerns crown structure and flower morphology; in the flowers the stamens completely lack pollen. When free pollination is ensured, even in a limited amount, the Tuleu gras variety produces highly satisfactory yields.

In view of its value as parent plant, it was considered important to investigate the reason for its male sterility in the plant as well as in its progenies.
